Find Solar South
Figure out your declination here at NOAA here at NOAA. Add or subtract it to 180°, magnetic south. Negative numbers indicate western movement. For Northampton, MA, true south is 14° west of magnetic south, so to 180° add 14° and you get 194°. Move your compass dial to your declination. Then, line the floating needle to north but follow the permanent arrow for solar orientation.
